HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!!
From the Captain:
After climbing 4000' in Calif., climbing two 6300' peaks, going over the continental divide, climbing Emory pass at 8300', climbing 6200' to McDonald Observatory, going through multiple steep hills in the Texas hill country, and many more rolling hills too numerous to mention, it looks like we are finally into the flat lands! The results are that we set a record for distance today at 70.5 miles bringing are total to 1876miles. We went from Pumpkin to Kountze Texas. We left the campground this morning with thick, cloudy sky and moisture over everything and verging on a fog. The roads were wet till after lunch and then the sun came out and dried things out. We had several dog attacks today, one with four dogs at one time. We carry Halt on the bike and Annette is getting really good at aiming. They peel away pretty quick after one shot. For an Easter Sunday things were really quiet and our bottom sides seemed to be the biggest problem with the continuous biking (no coasting, pics, etc.)
We met a young couple last night. They were just married and had bought a recumbent tandem for their trip across the US. They planned to spend one month to bike to San Diego and then they were going to spend 6-7 months to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. They were really enthusiastic and excited about their trip. They were 12 days out of St. Augustine which means they're doing about 100 miles a day. They had just had the bike built and picked it up to start the trip and never really had a chance to shake things down. The bike was enormously long, probably close to 9 feet. They were carrying 70 lbs of gear on the rear bike rack and when they would pedal the rear of the bike would swing side to side quite a bit, to the point I would worry about fatiguing the frame. I wish I had thought to tell them to line their pedal cranks at 90 degrees between the front and back. It might de-couple the side to side motion. We'll be anxious to hear how their trip progresses.
We want to thank Red Cloud Rv Park (2351 hwy. 96, Silsbee,Texas) for their support of our cause. It is a really nicely run park with nice facilities.

Wow! (I say that a lot, don't I? but that's 'cuz I am in total AWE!!!) Almost 1900 miles - that's incredible!!! Love the photos, loved reading about the newlyweds and their bike and plans (if they can survive all that, they can survive just about anything - right?)
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of the wisteria - beautiful and it looks like a great big one - I hardly ever see them so that was fun to see a photo of it.
How many days did it take you to get thru Texas? It's a big state so I'm curious.
Love, Barb
