Day44 - April 7, 2010 - Coast to Coast

From the Stoker: We biked on many different roads for 53. 5 miles from Oberlin to
Washington, Louisiana. Unfortunately, our miles depend often on where the next campground can be found. We can dry camp but it has gotten hot and we NEED the air conditioner which means we need electricity. The one tonight is awful but it is a place to hookup, turn on the air, and eat and sleep in comfort.
Carol's son, Brad, showed up around 4 p.m. (he works in LA) for dinner and a very nice visit.
We are biking through more populated areas, many little towns and communities, some beautiful and some poor and not so nice. No matter the area, the azaleas in front of the homes and churches are beautiful. How I wish we could grow azaleas this size in Michigan. There is water everywhere in LA so everything is very green. We passed many flooded fields where they are harvesting crawfish with a flat bottom boat called a Pirogue. Different times of the year, they use the same flooded fields to harvest rice.
There are many cemetery's along our bike route and very interesting. The bodies are buried above ground under cement slabs or huge slabs of granite due to the high water table in LA.
I used a whole can of Halt due to all the dog attacks. It's hard to tell if they are going to be friendly while they are barking and running and nipping at my heels, so before they take a bite, I spray them.
