Day 24 - March 15, 2010 - Coast to Coast

From the Captain: What a difference a day makes!!! Yesterday we were riding in shorts and tees, enjoying a strong tailwind covering 44 miles in 2.5 hrs. Overnight, a cold front came through and we woke to dark skies, cold temps, a strong headwind, and that special smell in the air when rain is around the desert.

We only had to go 35 miles to our next stop so we took off in long pants and our wind jackets. It wasn't long before we stopped our support vehicle and threw on our cold weather gear.

Initially, we were able to make about 13 mph into the wind but things deteriorated from there. By the half way point, we were in the granny gear going between 6-8 mph. Before long it started to rain lightly and Annette was getting colder as she got wetter. We were able to make it to Kent, our destination, and very happy to be there.

Tonight is our first night dry camping (no hookups). Should be a real experience. Tomorrow we tackle the last climb of the trip,m 6300 ft. into Fort Daves, TX. The fun part is that the McDonald Observatory is there. There will be a Star Gazing Party and we will be able to look through one of the largest telescopes in the world!

From the Stoker: I'm wet, cold, and tired. We are camped in the parking lot of a Mercantile Store in a town that only has this store in the whole town. We are camped 50 feet from a train that goes by and blows the horn about every 30 mins. It will be a long night. Are we having fun yet? Tomorrow is another day and will be a better day I am sure.

  2. Golly, I was just starting to be really jealous of you, but then you mentioned "wet, cold and tired" and camping 50 feet from a train and I changed my mind!! HA! HA!

Honestly, I'm still really jealous of this amazing trip and the Star Gazing Party and the McDonald Observatory just make me wish more and more that I could be with you. Can't wait to read all about it (but it's not the same as 'being there'. Stay strong, ride safe and Pedal On!!

    Love, Barb & John
