Day 17 - March 1, 2010 - Coast to Coast

Impressions from the Captain:

After one days rest, we tackled the 3rd of 4 climbs. This one was over the Continental Divide at 6,230 ft. elevation and 45 miles of biking. We were both a little down, wondering why we were so tired. We thought we had 2-3 miles of climbing left to reach the Divide. Within a 1/4 of a mile we crested the Divide feeling pretty good about our accomplishment.

We have one major climb left, over Emory Pass at 8,300 ft. elevation. Tomorrow we will ride from the city tot he base of the pass, which is an 800 ft. climb and rolling hills. Then we will take 2 days off for sightseeing before tackling Emory Pass.

From the Stoker:

It may be hard to follow our route, a little confusing. We are still in Silver City because we traveled here by car when we quit biking on Day 16 45 miles from here. Today we traveled by car back to that point and began biking. Our bike route tomorrow will have us driving back to the city and began biking from there to the base of the pass. We will drive back to the campground for our 2 day rest and sightseeing.

We are so excited to have just one more major climb. There will be hills thru Texas, but not this kind of elevation.

I am so looking forward to our 2 days of rest. Our bodies sure need it.

  1. Congratulations on riding over the Continental Divide - that's pretty cool!! The higher elevations must make biking even harder. So one more to go and then the trip is "all downhill"? Ha! Ha! You all deserves a couple of days of rest - Enjoy! Cannot wait to see your pictures!

Pedal On! (in a couple of days)
